Introduction to Historical Romance

Historical romance is set in a time earlier than our own, from prehistoric times (think Clan of the Cave Bear) to the 1990s. Popular historical genres include Medieval romance, Tudor romance and Regency romance.

Within each historical romance genre there can be certain ‘rules’ or expectations, such as in Regency romances, which were often comedies of manners reminiscent of Jane Austen’s novels. Traditional Regency romances penned by authors like Georgette Heyer did not tend to have any explicit love scenes in them.

However, in recent years Regency romance has begun to include love scenes and even ranged into the field of romantic erotica, women’s erotica. From sweet to sensual to romantic erotica, HerStory Books publishes historical romance in all historical time periods.
